AccessAir

Access Air was an airline based in Des Moines, Iowa.
==History==
AccessAir was founded in 1998 and, after multiple delays,〔http://csbj.com/1998/05/01/accessair-plans-hindered-again/〕 began operating flights in February 1999.〔http://www.xent.com/FoRK-archive/feb99/0005.html〕 Looking to provide lower rates at niche markets such as Des Moines, the Quad Cities, and Peoria, major investors at its start included many local companies, such as Caterpillar Inc. (Peoria)〔http://articles.chicagotribune.com/1998-12-05/business/9812050159_1_accessair-western-pacific-airlines-eastern-airlines〕 and FBL Financial Group, Principal Financial Group, MidAmerican Energy, and Pioneer Hi-Bred (Des Moines).〔http://articles.chicagotribune.com/1999-12-01/business/9912010279_1_accessair-principal-financial-group-caterpillar〕 Flights would fly from Des Moines to LaGuardia International Airport via either the Quad Cities or Moline. Direct service to Los Angeles was added later; Colorado Springs was later added as a stop.〔http://www.apnewsarchive.com/1999/AccessAir-To-File-for-Chapter-11/id-9a225a2d85a44b2889d863dbd1b97cac〕
Despite offering discounted rates below major carriers, AccessAir struggled to fill planes, with most planes not even half full.〔http://www.deseretnews.com/article/730614/AccessAir-files-for-bankruptcy.html?pg=all〕 The airline filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in November 1999, after just nine months of operations.〔http://www.radioiowa.com/1999/11/30/accessair-grounds-planes-files-bankruptcy/〕 A total of 14,000 enplanements resulted in an estimated $30 million in losses. Des Moines business leader John Ruan III came forward in the spring of 2000 and injected the money necessary to take control of the company and restart operations. The airline resumed flights in November 2000 with daily flights from Des Moines to Chicago Midway Airport with the intent of offering flights to Phoenix, Los Angeles, and Cedar Rapids.〔http://www.kamov.net/airline/accessair-des-moines-illinois-discount-passenger-service/〕 However, low passenger loads again led to the airline shutting down in February 2001.〔http://www.radioiowa.com/2001/02/28/accessair-hits-the-ground-again/〕
